The Dragonfly Lifestyle: Liminal Space
Transformation is often messy. It leaves us vulnerable, exposing us to facets of life against which we’ve built up walls. We might feel afraid, or uncertain of where we should go next.
When a dragonfly nymph has left water and begins its period of in-the-grass transformation, it, too, is soft and vulnerable – literally. But even unprotected in such a liminal state, it knows how to move towards their eventual flight, all from inner guidance.
The difference between us and the dragonfly? They don’t need to be reminded to move through liminality. They just do.
The Liminal Phase Of Transformation
The third phase of the Dragonfly Lifestyle Model is an in-between season marked by disorientation, disidentification, and disengagement. It’s often the most psychologically uncomfortable for humans because when we enter liminal space, we are suddenly immersed in the unknown. But what makes that hallmark uncertainty so arduous for us?
Humans want to KNOW. We want the answers to how we will survive, where we will work, how we will pay the rent. We want assuredness that our loved ones see us for who we are, and support us as we become who we’re meant to be.
So if we don’t know… how do we know we’re here? There are signs:
Confusion and disorientation manifesting as fear and anxiety
A lack of trust in your intuition, and no clear direction
Disconnection from your intellect and logic
Grasping onto any meaning to find comfort
When we don’t have that level of assuredness or confidence, we often find ourselves with the instinct to withdraw or otherwise resist the transformation. Sometimes, withdrawing can be helpful to our self-regulation – but it can also prevent us from stepping fully in the direction of our transformation.
But at certain points of our lives… we just don’t have the answers, at least not in certain terms. Our job is to accept that level of unknowing. To move along with it in alignment with the Soul’s guidance, which is now beginning to shine through in a way that cannot be ignored.
Trusting Our Inner Knowing
Rather than confining ourselves to a cocoon as we face this understanding, we can look to the dragonfly. In the grass, they are stripped of their protective armor – but they are propelled by their own inner intuition and faith. We can do the same, and in this way, be more fully engaged with the transformational journey.
I said earlier that we sometimes just don’t have the answers. However, that’s not entirely true. In a way, we do know – internally and intuitively.
While we may have lost our touchstones and sense of direction, we can still navigate by feel; surrendering to our own Soul’s guidance and the process of discovery. We must put one foot in front of the other and lean into our spiritual practices, faith, and trusted guides.
Our work in this phase is to navigate the uncertainty from our inner knowing, our intuition, rather than from our fear. Only then can we begin the next step of our journey – re-emergence, and learning how to live again.
